What is your relationship to independence?

Posted on Jul 4th, 2009 by sandi : sanddollar sandi
This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for July 04, 2009:

I was born in the State of New Hampshire, motto " Live Free or Die".  I reside in the State of Georgia, have for 40 years. My motto is " American by Birth - Southern by the Grace of God."  No Government can come to my home and illegally take my Bible, my gun, my livestock or means of living.  I am an American by Birth and that entitles me to certain Unalienable Rights.  When my accountant told me this Spring that I would owe X amount of  Dollars in taxes to the U.S. Government, he started to commiserate with me. I flatly told him, "If this is the price of being an American, I'm glad to pay it."  It's true that no man is an island and the same thing holds true for Nations.  The U.S. has taken a lot of Flak from the rest of the World and I don't deny that a bunch of it is justified.  We are what we are.  We are given the chance to succeed or fail by our own abilities, and if we feel we've been treated unjustly, why, we just stand up and  by God, fight for our rights. We work to resolve peacefully whenever we can, but like the Flag of Mass. states, "Don't Tread On Me."  We will not pay taxes without representation,  nor will we deny common cause when our help is asked.  When the Public tide of opinion demands change, the Government complies. It has no choice, "We" are the Government.  I've no stumps to grind this morning, just one to stand on and use it I will.  This is not a political forum, I am not a political person, but I will say, " I'm proud of my Independence Day and celebrate with all my heart.  Many of my ancestors paid in blood for me to do so and I honor them with my Flag, Fireworks, Watermelon, Boring as Hell Speeches, and a Small Town Parade complete with small boys yelling and barking dogs.    God Bless America!"

my ancestors paid in blood.  lots of it.  and we are still paying the price of living in such a cruel society that believes might makes right, and to dominate and control the earth and everyone and everything in it is the ultimate goal.  no, i will not celebrate the founding of this country.  and before you think what was done to the native americans was not done to everyone else, think about the schools.  think about how they take our children away to be indoctrinated into believing this system of control and abuse is a good thing, and that everything my ancestors believed in and fought for is bad.  and if that don't work, make them think it's unescapable instead, and fear for their lives should they disagree with what the majority thinks about it.

Personally, I have no problem with American patriotism and pride.  Boogie is correct about the oppression of native Americans, although I don't buy that 300 million Americans today are oppressed and brainwashed by a few thousand powerful republicans.

My only issue, is that America truly believes there is no better system in the world, and that the American way is THE Way.  That belief is actually the greatest flaw of the system.

I do wish all Americans a happy Independence Day, and to celebrate your family friends and community as you do.

Did you know Canadians had our Canada Day on Wednesday July 1st.  We are pretty proud of being Canadians too. For the record, while we were not pristine in our dealing with our First Nations, we did not massacre anyone, and actually prevented violent action against the original inhabitants of the land.

Thanks, Dave, I was feeling sad for a moment that all the good we have tried to do has been undermined by our own hands.  Oh, well, I'll still go to the fish fry, eat homemade ice-cream and scream my fool head off at the fireworks.  I don't suppose you know that I'm half Canadian. I don't have dual citizenship but my brother does, I lived in Canada until I was 7.  My Mother's family are all Canadians and I'm just as proud of my Canadian heritage as I am my Southern American heritage( let me say right here and now that my family owned no slaves although it was common practice with the Cherokee.  Just dodging bullets here.) The 1st National Anthem I learned to sing was “God Save the Queen”, 2nd “O Canada” and “The star -Spangled Banner” still strangles me on the high notes.

Stacey, I remarked on MY relationship to independence,  I'm sure you're every bit an American as I am or you would have not had that freedom to speak your mind so publicly.  I'm glad as it takes all kinds to create a Great Nation and keep it running right.  I'm sorry your day won't be a happy as the rest of ours, I'm assuming of course, your family will miss out as well.  If nothing else, It's beautiful weather for the parades and It's also my Daughter Cameron's Birthday so we have more than one reason to celebrate.  Go eat some Ice cream anyway, just for the hell of it.
